Facebook's HHVM: Redefining the Possibilities of PHP

When the social media giant like Facebook delves into the development arena, everybody has to take notice. The simple reason being the impact that a development from a platform like this can have. Though meant primarily for internal usage, the social networking giant has been doing some development in the PHP front.

In a recent development, Facebook has made amendments to run the PHP web programs more efficiently. In tune with their strategy, they have developed a PHP virtual machine. So what is so special about this new tool? Well, according to Facebook this tool can run PHP programs up to nine times faster than other platforms.

The strategy has been implanted, as the company seems to find umpteen potential in the future of PHP in web development. The tool has been named as HHVM (HipHop Virtual Machine). It has already been integrated to various Facebook servers worldwide. Undoubtedly, the companies offering PHP web development services are keeping a keen eye open to the development from Facebook.

More Forays from the Giant:

Though the new update is comparatively fresh in concept, this is not the first foray from Facebook in the arena of web development. In an earlier compilation, it has developed an earlier version of the same called HipHop compiler; which effectively translated PHP codes to more user friendly ones like C++. This enabled compilation ahead of development tie and thus saved time. Facebook did enjoy a much-improved performance due to the development. It is to be seen if the new developments from the firm bring about any type of fundamental changes in PHP website development.
